Viral Woman Who Hurt Saleslady With Humidifier To Undergo Psychiatric Evaluation

The family of Medelina Yamazaki, the woman seen in the viral video berating and assaulting a saleslady in a Cebu City mall Saturday, December 7, has refused to post bail for her temporary liberty.

Mabolo Police Station Chief Investigator Jeffrey Larrobis said that Yamazaki’s relatives want to let her undergo a psychiatric evaluation first.

According to Larrobis, Yamazaki’s family requested to pull her out of the precinct’s detention facility and transfer her to a psychiatric facility.

Larrobis said they did not allow it as doing so would violate the legal procedure — an arrested person could not be released from detention without an order from the prosecutor or court.

Yamazaki was charged with physical injury, threat, and malicious mischief before the Cebu City Prosecutor’s Office on Monday.

The prosecutor resolved to file the complaints in court after she opted not to avail herself of the right to preliminary investigation and file a counter-affidavit during the inquest proceeding.

Larrobis was told by Yamazaki’s lawyer that she was maltreated when she was still young and reportedly suffered postpartum depression after giving birth to her child.

In Yamazaki’s case, she has to post bail before she could go out of the detention cell.

If Yamazaki’s family still refuses to post bail for her temporary liberty, the police will get a commitment order from the court to authorize them to transfer her to the Cebu City Jail in Barangay Kalunasan.

“The bail of each case is set at PHP 3,000,” Larrobis said.

Meanwhile, Jennifer Fabillar, the victim, filed the complaints against Yamazaki and she was assisted by representatives of Mia Maison Home Fragrance, her employer.

The information, or the charge sheet, from the prosecutor, was released on Wednesday, and on the same day, Yamazaki was still detained at the Mabolo Police Community Precinct 2.

Yamazaki was arrested after she struck Fabillar’s face with an air humidifier but she told the police that she got angry when Fabillar admonished her for the way she handled the device.

Fabillar, for her part, said she only asked Yamazaki to be careful so she would not spill water on the air humidifier.
