Lawmaker: Senator Drilon Attacks SEA Games As Reaction To VP Robredo Firing

A ranking congressman has insinuated that Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon is still smarting over the firing of Vice President Leni Robredo as an anti-drug official, thus he is assailing the administration in connection with the faux pas-ridden hosting of the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.

Deputy Speaker and Surigao del Sur 2nd district Representative Johnny Pimentel pointed out that both Senator Drilon and VP Robredo belong to the Liberal Party (LP), the country’s leading opposition faction.

“Senator Drilon is from the opposition party and it would be normal for him to criticize the administration,” Pimentel said.

“Especially [since] their party leader, Vice President Robredo, has just been fired by the President,” added Pimentel.

VP Robredo, a former member of the House of Representatives, sits as chairperson of LP grabbed headlines last week when President Rodrigo Duterte removed her from her position as co-chair of the Inter-Agency Committee on Anti-Illegal Drugs (ICAD).

The Vice President held the ICAD seat for less than three weeks.

After this, Senator Drilon blamed the House of Representatives for the budget delays that reportedly hampered organizers of the 30th SEA Games that will officially take place from November 30 to December 11.

A week earlier, when VP Robredo was still ICAD co-chair but was having a hard time fitting in, Drilon criticized the decision to spend over P50 million for the SEA Games cauldron that will be lit throughout the staging of the competitions.

Pimentel appealed to Filipinos, especially to netizens, to cooperate with the government in the smooth staging of the games, the controversies notwithstanding.

“I don’t think that at this point we should resort to finger-pointing and blaming anyone. Instead, we should join hands in supporting our country for the hosting of the SEA Games,” the lawmaker said.
