Hero Police Killed In Grenade Blast To Receive Posthumous Award From PNP

The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Friday, November 29 said it will confer a posthumous award to the police officer who died while shielding others from a grenade blast in a school in Misamis Oriental while his family receives financial benefits.

Posthumous awards are made when the intended recipient dies as a result of the action which merits the award.

PNP spokesperson Brigadier General Bernard Banac commended the brave act of S/Mst. Sgt. James Magno who died on Thursday after he and his partner, S/Mst. Sgt. Alice Balido responded to complaints of a man causing trouble inside a school in Initao town.

The man, identified as 65-year old Ebrahim Ampaso Basher, was carrying a hand grenade while walking around the school.

Basher threw the grenade when he was confronted by police officers.

Magno then dropped down and covered the grenade with his own body to save innocent civilians around, while his partner, shot the suspect resulting in his death.

The explosion also injured Balido and some 10 students in the area. Police said the wounded persons are in stable condition.

“Matapos lamang ‘yung opening ng Southeast Asian Games, maaaring mag-schedule po ng pagdalaw ang ating officer-in-charge, si General Gamboa, doon sa namatay nating bayaning pulis at bibigyang suporta ang kanyang pamilya,” he further stated.

Banac said the PNP officer-in-charge also offered his condolences to the bereaved family of Magno.

The Philippine National Police mourns the death of another hero cop. We give our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family of Police Senior Master Sergeant Jason Magno of Initao Police Station in Misamis Oriental.

PSMS Magno made a supreme sacrifice by covering the grenade with his own body to save innocent civilian lives. He truly lives up to his sworn duty, to serve and protect even if it costs his life.

OIC PNP, Police Lieutenant General Archie Francisco Gamboa also expresses his condolences to the family of Magno and assures them to get full support on financial assistance and benefits as well as for female police officer, Police Senior Master Sergeant Alice Balido, though wounded, managed to respond courageously and singlehandedly contained the threat by shooting the suspect.

Surviving kin of PSMS Magno will receive death benefits which include:

P250,000.00 pesos from the Presidents Social Fund;

P141,000.00 pesos to P181,000.00 pesos Special Financial Assistance (SFA) from PNP;

Burial benefits worth P50,000.00 pesos; and

P200,000.00 pesos gratuity from National Police Commission
As a member of the Public Safety Mutual Benefit Fund his family may also be entitled to death insurance.

These death benefits are on top of the estimated P15,000.00 pesos monthly lifetime pension from the PNP and roughly the same amount of pension for five years from the NAPOLCOM.

We urge the public to include in their prayers the fast recovery of Sergeant Balido and the wounded students.

Initial police investigation showed that prior to the explosion, Basher had a heated argument over a personal problem with a local government employee.

Concerned students and individuals tried to pacify the man but he threatened to detonate the grenade he was carrying and this prompted the students to call the police.

Police said the investigation is still ongoing on the case.
