Blind Filipino Boy Wows Ellen DeGeneres, Invites Him To Sing “Too Good At Goodbyes” In Ellen

A visually impaired student from Bacolod City, whose video of him singing at a mall went viral and wowed several international artists, has been invited to The Ellen DeGeneres Show, an American television variety comedy talk show.

Carl Malone Montecido, a resident of Barangay 29 in Bacolod City, said he was so happy that international singers noticed him and happier that he was invited to The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

However, the show’s staff who spoke to him via a video call did not want any further details of his guesting disclosed, Montecido said.

In the viral video, that had 10.1 million views on Twitter, 11 million views on Facebook, and 3.6 million views on Instagram, Montecido, still wearing his school uniform, was belting out the song “Too Good at Goodbyes,” by singer-songwriter Sam Smith.

Smith noticed Montecido and reposted the viral video, with the caption “WHO IS THIS KID!!!!!? YOU ARE OUT OF THIS UNIVERSE WHOEVER YOU ARE ❤ ,” on his Twitter and Instagram accounts.

Other international artists who were amazed by Montecido’s singing prowess were the first-ever American Idol winner and The Voice judge Kelly Clarkson, Pussycat Dolls member Nicole Scherzinger, and Niall Horan of One Direction.

Montecido and his parents Divina and Ferdinand were invited to the SM City Bacolod Supermarket, where his video was filmed by Trixie Madison, a mallgoer.

Montecido was known as the blind balladeer from Bacolod when he became one of the finalists on ABS-CBN Showtime's Tawag ng Tanghalan contest in 2016.

He also joined Pilipinas Got Talent in 2010 where he also made it to the semi-finals.

Divina said that they were not expecting the support of the public to her son, who is now a Grade 9 student at the Bacolod City High School-Special Education Center.

The 21-year-old Montecido said he is happy that a new door opened for his singing career and thanked his parents for the love, sacrifices and everything to send him and his six other siblings to school even if they are poor.

Montecido said he is also grateful to the Bacolodnons and even those abroad, who supported him since his TNT and PGT days.

“I thought after my competitions here in the Philippines, there will be no more. I am singing on a freelance basis in Bacolod and now I am given a chance to sing in other countries, too,” Montecido said.

He said his being visually impaired has not hindered him and his dreams, as he does not see it as a burden or as a means to gain sympathy, but as an example for others like him not to lose hope.

“My expectation was only to be launched as a singer locally, but who would have thought that a visually impaired person like me could reach that spot,” Montecido said.

Further, when one would hear “Filipinos on Ellen”, you will immediately think of “Charice” or “Arnel Pineda”, but there is still a myriad of other Filipino talents that have been featured on this well-viewed television talk show.

Singer Marcelito Pomoy recently appeared on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” wherein he showcased his “doble kara” singing talent and shared his life story before he became a singer in the Philippines.

The TV host also found Aldrich Talonding and his cousin James Bucong after their cover version of Luther Vandross’ “Dance With My Father” went viral online and invited the two to her show.

Then 12-year-old Rhap Salazar appeared on Ellen after the talk show host found a video of him online, he was then invited to the show wherein he performed his rendition of “All By Myself”.

Zendee Tenerefe became famous online as the “random girl” singing karaoke songs in a mall and she blew everyone away when she sang Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You”, and Jennifer Holliday’s “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going”.

Maria Aragon made a name for herself after recording her own rendition of Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” and it was also because of her version that got her invited to Ellen.
