PRRD Gets Support From Congress To Penalize Greedy Oligarchs, Water Firms
Buhay Partylist Representative Lito Atienza Wednesday, December 4, lauded President Rodrigo Duterte for initiating moves to probe the alleged onerous provisions of concession agreements between the government and the two Metro Manila water concessionaires, Manila Water Company and Maynilad Water Services, Inc.
“Ako man ay nagkulang sa umpisa, na hindi ko pinaniniwalaan ang lahat ng sinasabi ng Pangulo. Sa araw na ito, nakayuko po ang inyong lingkod. Sumasaludo ng dalawang kamay kay Pangulong Rodrigo Roa Duterte sa kanyang katapatan sa ating bandila at sa katapatan sa ating mamamayan,” Rep. Atienza said.
The former critic of Duterte administration said the President’s statement threatening to file charges of economic sabotage against the two private water concessionaires is a welcome development for the millions of water users in Metro Manila, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, and Rizal.
“Again, he has proven that he has the political will to stand up to these oligarchs and free the Filipino people from their clutches. Hindi n’ya hinayaang magtagumpay ang hayok na pandarambong nitong dalawang concessionaires na ‘to and we ought to support the President here,” Rep. Atienza said.
The former secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources said a close examination of the contracts has become necessary as allegations of corruption have been aired by concerned quarters.
“Where have you seen a business contract where the concessionaires cannot lose and always end up making hundreds of billions of pesos at the expense of the people? Any business contract can make money for the principal or you can lose money at the same time,” Rep. Atienza noted.
Rep. Atienza said President Duterte reacted correctly when news came out about the decision of the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) based in Singapore.
“We have been pointing out anomalies in the concession agreements between the government and these two giant corporations for more than a decade now,” the lawmaker said,
“These water companies should be made accountable for their inadequate service,” he added.
Rep. Atienza calls out Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano and his fellow lawmakers to support the President on his fight against these greedy oligarchs, Maynilad and Manila Water.
“We have to stand up at once. I challenge the Speaker of the House to take action on this matter. You lead, we will follow. We cannot stay quiet. We have to act on these concession agreements. Ito ba ay nakakatulong o ginagawa tayong mga timawa at mga pulubi. Kaya mga minamahal kong kasamahan we move as one and as Representative of the People. We as the Member of Congress we will act as one to support and the President.” the lawmaker said
