Lawmakers To Penalize Media Outlets Guilty Of Spreading Fake News About SEA Games

A lawmaker on Wednesday, November 27, expressed support to the proposed investigation on supposed “fake news” about the reported blunders in hosting the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in the Philippines.

Kabayan Party-list Representative Ron Salo said concerted, deliberate, organized, and seemingly malicious disinformation campaign in the media undermined the country’s hosting and discredited organizers and the country itself.

“I will definitely be happy to investigate this particular, fake news being propagated either in the social media or national media, traditional media,” said Representative Salo during the plenary session at the House of Representatives.

The lawmaker added that if found guilty, the fake news authors can be held criminally liable.

Furthermore, Representative Salo accused the media of propagating disinformation regarding the hosting and preparations.

“I have this personal impression that they are the first to have concerted, deliberate, organized malicious disinformation campaign in the media, both traditional and in social media, aim at discrediting the organizers, the games, and the Philippines,” he said.

The lawmaker also said the media is biased with their reportage on the game’s hosting.

“This representation is deeply bothered how the national media is treating every single alleged shortcoming in our hosting of the SEA Games, as s if these are more important than the game itself,” said Representative Salo.

He added that the media appear to be having a feast on featuring all the alleged mistakes but neglecting to report the good experiences of the majority of the delegates.

Meanwhile, Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said President Rodrigo Duterte, who just arrived from an official trip, was “displeased” by what he has been hearing about the regional multi-sport which will run from November 30 to December 11.

“The President is not pleased by what he has been hearing about the certain snafu, certain delays, certain allegations of athletes not being fed properly, of athletes arriving late or not on time delivered to their places of rest or residence. He’s displeased,” Spox Panelo said in an interview.

“He doesn’t want that and there were allegations of fraud coming out on the newspapers. He doesn’t want that either. He wants to investigate that,” the spokesperson added.
