Philippines To Receive $18 Million Worth Smart Bombs From US To Fight Terrorism

The Philippines under the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte is getting $18 million worth of smart bombs from the United States as part of a military assistance program from Washington, according to Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana on Tuesday, November 17.

Lorenzana told reporters that the delivery to the Philippines of precision-guided munition was discussed with US Charge d’Affaires John Law at a meeting last week in Camp Aguinaldo, the Department of National Defense headquarters.

“They have given us USD18 million worth of military equipment that will arrive next month. Those are precision-guided munitions that can be dropped with pinpoint accuracy,” he said during an interview with defense reporters in South Harbor, Manila.

A precision-guided missile capability will boost the AFP’s counterterrorism campaign.

A smart bomb is a guided munition intended to precisely hit a specific target, to minimize collateral damage, and increase lethality against intended targets.

The bombs had been used on Islamic State followers, who tried to establish an IS caliphate in Marawi City in 2017.
