Philippines’ First Warship With Anti-Ship Missile Systems From South Korea To Arrive In April

The most important milestone for the Philippine Navy (PN) last year is the launching of the lead ship of its two missile-frigate order by South Korean shipbuilder (Hyundai Heavy Industries) HHI and was based on the HDF-2600 frigate design, which in turn was derived from the Incheon-class frigate of the Republic of Korea Navy (ROKN).

The launch for the lead ship, BRP Jose Rizal (FF-150), the country’s first guided-missile frigate took place May 23 in Ulsan, South Korea and is expected to be delivered to the Philippines by April or May 2020.

The BRP Jose Rizal (FF-150) is able to conduct Anti-Air Warfare (AAW), Anti-Surface Warfare (ASUW), Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) and Electronic Warfare (EW) Operations and it is fully equipped with Surface-to-Air and Surface-to-Surface Missiles, torpedoes, launchers, and weapon systems.

The armament of the BRP Jose Rizal (FF-150) includes one 1 x Oto Melara 76 mm Super Rapid Gun, one ASELSAN SMASH 30mm Secondary Gun, four S&T Motiv 12.7mm K6 Heavy Machine Guns, and 1 Close-in weapon system.

The BRP Jose Rizal (FF-150) is also equipped with anti-air missiles that include two Twin MBDA Simbad RC with Mistral missiles and one single 8-cell Vertical Launching System (FFBNW).

Other armament consists of two Twin LIGNex1 SSM-700K C-Star Anti Ship Missile and SEA Triple Trainable Torpedo Launchers.

There is also a flight deck and enclosed hanger that can host a Leonardo AW-159 Wildcat naval helicopter.

During the launching ceremony for the ship, PN flag-officer-in-command, Vice Admiral Robert Empedrad, called the country’s acquisition of the ship a “strategic move”.

“It is a strategic move as this ship will be the most (capable) in the PN due to its multiple capabilities,” he said, adding that the PN considers BRP Jose Rizal (FF-150) as the most powerful battleship when armed with sensors and weapons capable of detecting and disabling threats from air, sea and underwater surfaces as well as electronic combat capabilities.

The BRP Jose Rizal (FF-150) is also fitted with a Hanwha Systems’ Naval Shield combat management system (CMS) which integrates all shipboard sensors and weapons and decides on which is ideal to deal with any incoming threats.
