Pres. Duterte Grateful To Filipinos Over Early Lead In Time’s ‘100 Most Influential People’ Online Poll
Malacañang expressed gratitude Monday, March 27, for
President Rodrigo Duterte’s early lead in an online poll for Time magazine’s
annual list of 100 most influential people in the world.
“President Duterte is grateful to the Filipino all over the
world for their support for him and his agenda of real change in the Philippine
society,” Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella said in a statement.
“As a public servant, he serves the nation faithfully and
without any thought of receiving any distinction. For him, the presidency begins
and ends with public trust,” Abella added.
President Duterte grabbed the early lead in online poll for
Time’s “most influential” person, which opened last Friday, March 24.
The President obtained five percent of the votes, as of Wednesday,
March 29.
President Duterte became famous globally for his incendiary
comments against world leaders, including former United States President Barack
Obama, and for his deadly war on drugs.
Following him in the “most influential” shortlist were Pope
Francis, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg,
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, US billionaire Bill Gates, and English
actress Emma Watson.
Completing the shortlist’s top 10 were music superstars Lady
Gaga and Beyonce, and “Harry Potter” author JK Rowling.
Other world leaders included in the shortlist were US
President Donald Trump, Mexican President Enrique Nieto, and Chinese President
Xi Jinping.
The online poll will close on April 16 and the official list
of Time 100 most influential people in the world will be announced on April 20.
In December 2016, Forbes magazine also announced President Duterte
as among the most powerful people.
