CIA Documents Reveal Cory Aquino Requested US Airstrike To Kill Filipinos During 1989 Coup d’état
Recently, America’s Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has
declassified more than 12 Million documents, publishing them online and making
these records searchable and accessible to the public.
One of these documents included an information on the
Philippine government, specifically about the 1989 coup d’état led by former
Military Colonel-turned Senator Gregorio ‘Gringo’ Honasan against the
administration of then President Corazon ‘Cory’ Aquino.
The declassified document claimed that Cory Aquino asked US
for military assistance but Washington allegedly refused because of the risks
of killing innocent Filipinos at the height of the rebellion.
It mentioned former Defense Chief Fidel V. Ramos saying that
the US government offered military assistance to crush a mutiny by dissidents
seeking to topple the Aquino government.
However, Cory Aquino is said to have personally asked US for
help; and America responded by sending US warplanes to provide air cover to
allow the Philippine military to attack the mutineers.
“The Los Angeles Times and the Washington Post reported last
weekend that the Aquino government asked for airstrikes but US officials
refused because of political risks in killing Filipinos,” the document further
read.
The document also revealed 12 opposition lawmakers condemned
the Philippine’s request for foreign assistance to quash the rebellion, and
described such request as “a shameless act of surrender of sovereignty to a
foreign power.”
