Vice President Leni Robredo Gives Her Side Of The Story Regarding House Resettlement Projects

Robredo, who chairs the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC), said she was informed that many displaced settlers, mostly from Metro Manila, have been sent to their resettlement areas but have yet to get power and water services, an article written by Carmela Reyes-Estrope on The Philippine Daily Inquirer mentioned.

As such, Robredo noted that the HUDCC will no longer agree with the idea of simply building housing projects and be contented with just relocating people without clear policy and Robredo noted that the government had long been building “boxes” in their shelter programs but had not developed the dwelling sites into decent homes and communities. She also mentioned in her statement that she did not find a comprehensive road map after she took over the HUDCC. She highly regarded that in the next housing project, the informal settlers should be located in an area which is accessible and near their work areas.

In addition to this, the vice president said government housing was not given importance by some beneficiaries as most of the families prefer to sell their given units and return to being informal settlers instead. One of the common reasons is that the housing unit given to the families are located in remote areas which are quite far from the city and far from their work or sources of daily living.

According to Robredo, a plan to convert the HUDCC into a department had been discussed in a recent Cabinet meeting on top of the bills in Congress that seek the creation of a housing department. Report shows that there were 18 national and provincial government housing projects in Pandi, Bustos and Bocaue towns. Until the services are improved, the National Housing Authority has been asked to stop relocating families to the resettlement sites.
