The 2nd Japan-Made Response Ship For Coast Guard Arrives In The Philippines
The Philippine Coast Guard’s second brand-new multi-role
response vessel (MRRV) from Japan, BRP Malabrigo, has arrived in the country.
The PCG and Department of Transportation rendered an arrival
honor for BRP Malabrigo at the Headquarters Coast Guard Ready Force Pier 13 in
Manila.
The Coast Guard said BRP Malabrigo will be an additional
floating asset to the search and rescue vessels, utilizes to further strengthen
its mandated maritime functions such as law enforcement, security, search and
rescue, environmental protection and safety administration within the country’s
maritime domain.
According to PCG spokesman Commander Armand Balilo, BRP
Malabrigo will be deployed in Panatag Shoal to augment the number of ships
already dispatched there.
BRP Malabrigo, the second of the ten 44-meter MRRVs from
Japan, was inspected by PCG personnel last month before it set sail and it has
undergone a successful sea trial.
Designed with a bullet-proof navigation bridge, it is
equipped with fire monitors, night vision capability, a work boat and radio
direction finder capability, as well as communications and radio monitoring
equipment from Rohde & Schwarz to enhance its reconnaissance, pursuit and
communications capabilities.
Furthermore, the ten MRRVs from Japan are acquired under the
Maritime Safety Capability Improvement Project awarded by DOTr to the Japan
Marine United Corporation (JMU).
It is being implemented as an official development
assistance project via a tied load extended by the Japan International
Cooperation Agency.
Moreover, BRP Malabrigo is named after Faro de Punta de
Malabrigo, one of the 24 lighthouses erected by the Spaniards in the
Philippines.
PCG said the remaining eight brand-new MRRVs which will be
built for the PCG will also be named after the primary lighthouses in the
country to denote its significance as one of the navigational aids in the
maritime industry.
